how and where to set DXSHMEM=1??

I met a problem that "out of memory", and I found someone said set the variable DXSHMEM=1 can solve it. So I open the /usr/bin/dx and I don't find where to set  DXSHMEM=1.
cause I tried "DXSHMEM=1 export DXSHMEM" to the dx file , after that it can't run well.

What system are you running on? The method of setting
environment variables differs.
