Coordinate representation
06/09/06 at 12:45:55

Hello,

We are using openDX before for the visualisation of CFD solutions.
A major problem we have however is the single precision representation
of coordinates, which prevents us from visualising (RANS) wall resolved computations.

To give an example : the body of the dlrF4 airplane model - a well-known
testcase (url : http://aaac.larc.nasa.gov/tsab/cfdlarc/aiaa-dpw) - is about 1 m long,
while the imposed fine mesh resolution needs a wall normal distance for
the boundary layer mesh (which covers the whole body)
of 1e-7 m. This is impossible to represent in single precision.

Are there any plans to incorporate double precision coordinates in the future,
or is there a workaround ?

Thanks in advance,

Koen

I have been thinking about this for a long time. I agree that the 'positions' component should have been a double. Don't know why the researchers didn't (I think it was a speed thing back then.) Anyway, it will mean going through all the code in the executive and update all code to accept double positions. If someone wants to donate some time to do this--I'll incorporate their changes, but I just don't have the time right now.
